Did you know that San Luis Obispo County is the 10th most expensive place in the country to buy a home with the average home price of $480,000?
Did you know that in California …
- 20% of households spend at least half their income on housing costs? The national average is 15% of households.
- 28% of renters spend at least half their income on housing and are more likely to be severely housing cost burdened than home owners.
- Renters make up 46% of households. Owners make up 54% of households.
- The Median monthly OWNER housing cost is $1250. The Median monthly RENTER housing cost is $1616.
- The median income for California is $61,514, compared to a US median income of $53,648.
The cost of housing in San Luis Obispo County is higher than these figures.
We need to remember that housing is a right, not a privilege. And that unless we all live in dignity, none of us live in dignity.
Our strategic plan states that “HFHSLOCO advances its ability to expand awareness of housing as a critical foundation for eliminating barriers to a better, healthier, more financially stable life when we successfully mobilize volunteers for the cause of affordable housing. Volunteer support not only raises walls, but also backing for public policy and market changes that lead to even broader impact. In the course of uniting around improved housing for all, personal transformation occurs in all, turning both individuals and the process itself into powerful conduits that demonstrate the importance of eliminating poverty by providing simple, decent, and affordable housing.”
Following our strategic initiative, Habitat for SLO County is advocating with the other 48 California Habitat affiliates in to advance homeownership opportunities for lower-income households, promote access to a range of safe, healthy, affordable housing options, and to cultivate and preserve healthy and vibrant communities throughout the state. On March 1, 2017 we met with every senator and assembly person in the State legislature to talk about the housing crisis facing us and how together we can address this crisis and ensure more housing is available to our residents. We are supporting or sponsoring a variety legislative bills that will assist us and other housing organizations to address our housing crisis and ensure that housing is provided for the homeless, low-income families, for veterans, and seniors, and includes shelters, rental units, and, yes, new homes such as those built by Habitat.
In the future, we will be posting notices about pending legislation that needs the support of California residents to be passed. We encourage you to research the legislation we are supporting, and if it is something you can support to join us in advocating for the people we serve and others who are having difficulty finding safe, healthy, and well maintained places to live.
Thank you for your support of Habitat for Humanity for SLO County – your interest and support are ensuring that we can continue to fulfill our mission of building homes, communities, and hope!
