On Friday, July 21st Habitat for Humanity for San Luis Obispo County hosted the third annual Build a Cardboard House Competition at the Boys and Girls Club of South SLO County Summer Camp. The event engaged Oceano and South County youth and raised awareness of the need for affordable housing in San Luis Obispo County. Teams of youth were able to put their creativity and construction skills to the test by building a house made from cardboard!
Six teams participated in the event and each team had five youth participants. Members from the American Society of Civil Engineers for SLO served as team mentors and assisted with planning, the design, and construction approach for the houses. Each team had 1.5 hours to complete their project using only the cardboard, paint, duct tape, and other materials provided by HFHSLOCO. Completed houses were judged by Boys and Girls Club leaders based on construction, innovation, completeness, presentation, and team work.
The competition was a huge success and the youth had a blast! Each team was able to finish constructing their masterpiece within the time limit. The finished products were quite impressive. Although the competition was stiff, The Master Builders took first place! Below are highlights from the event!
